Battle inspired fundraising ride

When Marg Hitching pedals her trusty bike Hilda into Busselton on Sunday afternoon, it will be both the end and the beginning of a long fundraising journey.

Mrs Hitching is riding from Perth to Busselton to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA, with half the proceeds going to the research arm of the foundation and the other half going to support those who have been diagnosed with the disease and their families.

The Geographe Cycle Club member took on the challenge to raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease and celebrate the life of friend and co-worker Darren Whitby, who died after battling the disease last year.

Joined by fellow cycle club members Chris Ebsary, Laurie Collett, Tricia Miller and Bob Hingston, Mrs Hitching will cycle from South Perth all the way to Busselton, and supporters are invited to welcome them at the Busselton RSL from 4pm.

Mrs Hitching said the concept of the ride was ongoing; Darren liked to ride a wave, ride a bike and ride through life, and she would like to see the ride continue in years to come.

“The ride is a symbolic gesture,” she said.

“It causes people to stop and think. Perhaps they will think about Darren and what he went through, and hopefully donate to the cause.”

Donation tins and boxes have been distributed throughout Busselton over the past few weeks.

Darren’s wife, Kirsten, said Mrs Hitching had been an inspiration, and it was rewarding to see the fundraising initiative had already seen a great deal of support.

“For me, it is about commemorating Darren,” she said

“He was an amazing man”

Mrs Whitby said MNDAWA had provided a lot of help to the family throughout the tough time.

“There are other sufferers in the South West,” she said.

“MNDAWA helped us with equipment and emotional support. They don’t get a lot of funding, and rely heavily on community donations”

The finish line welcome for Darren’s Ride will include fundraising raffles, a silent auction, and sausage sizzle as part of proceedings.

Thanks for getting on board Darren’s Ride

Thanks for getting on board Darren's RideThank you so much to everyone who is now on board Darren’s Ride. Thanks to you, we  have already hit our target of $5,000, so please keep the ride going, and help us get the next $5,000.

MNDWA relies so heavily on the support and generosity of the community, to provide care and support services for people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), as well as their families, who are also greatly impacted. Ongoing research is also needed to find a cause, treatment and cure.

Please help us to commemorate Darren, and achieve our goal of living in a world free of MND.
